Projected Capacitive Touch Screen Controllers

PenMount projected capacitive (PCAP) touch screen controllers are a vital part of providing numerous advanced features to projected capacitive (PCAP) touch screens. PenMount projected capacitive (PCAP) touch screen controller technology allows these features such as noise immunity, water handling, gloved touch, and thick cover lenses to be used simultaneously. PenMount also provides firmware, drivers, and user-friendly utilities for fast and easy parameter adjustment. Standard PenMount projected capacitive (PCAP) touch screen controllers are built to work seamlessly in most environments and applications.

Projected Capacitive Touch Screen Noise Immunity

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) is prevalent in many environments. Projected capacitive (PCAP) touch screens are sensitive to EMI and this noise can interfere with the accurate detection of touch events. PenMount projected capacitive (PCAP) touch screen controllers use powerful firmware and hardware techniques to mitigate noise interference at different frequency bandwidths to maintain accurate touch detection. AMT PCAP solutions meet the following EMC standards:

Industrial
IEC 61000-4-2 : Electrostatic Discharge Level 4, class B
IEC 61000-4-3 : Radiated Susceptibility Level III 10 V/m, criteria A
IEC 61000-4-4 : Electrical Fast Transient Level III Vpp ±2 KV
IEC 61000-4-6 : Conducted Susceptibility Level III 15 Vrms, criteria A

Medical
IEC EN60601-1-2 RS (Radiated Susceptibility) 9 ~ 28V/m, Class A

Railroad
IEC EN50121-3-2 RS (Radiated Susceptibility) 3 ~ 20V/m, Class A

Projected Capacitive Touch Screen Water Handling

Since water is conductive, false touch signals may be generated when water comes into contact with a projected capacitive (PCAP) touch screen. PenMount projected capacitive (PCAP) touch controllers can filter out false touch signals when there is a small amount or flowing water on the touch screen surface. If water is present, dry areas of the touch screen surface will still function properly. In addition, touch functionality can be disabled automatically when a large amount of water is detected. Once water on the touch screen surface is dried, normal touch operation resumes automatically.

Projected Capacitive Touch Screen Gloved Touch

Operating a projected capacitive (PCAP) touch screen while gloved is common in medical and industrial settings. Projected capacitive (PCAP) touch screen controllers detect touch input by measuring minute changes in electric fields as a finger approaches the surface of the touch screen. Gloved touch operation can increase the difficulty of touch detection.

PenMount projected capacitive (PCAP) touch screen controllers apply unique algorithms so that gloved touch, whether with latex gloves, cotton gloves, or work gloves, can be detected accurately.

Projected Capacitive Touch Screen with Thick Cover Lens

Outdoor equipment or systems in heavily trafficked areas often require projected capacitive (PCAP) touch screens with a thick cover lens for added robustness. Since glass thickness is directly related to detected signal strength, the projected capacitive (PCAP) touch screen controller detects fewer signals when thick glass is used. PenMount effectively increases signal strength and maintains an optimal noise ratio to maintain normal operation with thick glass support while effectively avoiding false touch points.

Projected Capacitive Touch Screen with Virtual Keys

Projected capacitive (PCAP) touch screen virtual keys bring convenient shortcuts and one-touch command execution to the surface of any projected capacitive touch panel. Virtual Keys use the same circuit as the projected capacitive (PCAP) touch screen active area and does not affect a touch screen's true flat appearance. The touch screen active area is delineated into a touch area surrounded by or adjacent to a button area and disabled area and users can designate the size and position of the button area, add/remove buttons, adjust button size and position, and define button function up to a maximum of 20 buttons. Commands defined in the USB HID (Human Interface Device) Usage Tables specification can be assigned to a virtual key.

Projected Capacitive Touch Screen Control Board

A projected capacitive (PCAP) touch screen controller IC is mounted on a separate PCB (see below). The analog signals will transmit from the touch sensor through the FPC (flexible printed circuit) to the PCB. The controller IC firmware will convert this capacitance data into digital touch position data. This digital data will be transmitted further to the host computer via an onboard serial interface such as USB, UART, I2C, or RS-232.

    Control Board Advantages:
  • Higher design and integration flexibility due to separate control board.
  • Faster prototyping with lower tooling and production cost.
Projected Capacitive Touch Screen COF

A COF (Chip on Flex) mounts a projected capacitive (PCAP) touch screen controller IC on the sensor FPC (see below Fig.). The analog capacitance signal will be converted into digital position data on the FPC. This position data will be transferred to the host computer by the serial interface on the FPC (such as USB, UART, I2C etc.)

    COF Advantages:
  • High integration of controller IC and sensor which is very important in mobile hand-held devices.
  • Digital interface only requires a small number of circuits, which makes long and slim FPC design possible for easy product installation.
  • Connectors for touch panel and system interface are no longer required.
