The receiver is often located between the compressor and the dryers so that it can behave as a water k/o vessel, usually outfitted with an automatic drainer. However, it's best to have an air cooler and a coalescing filter immediately on the discharge of the compressor to knock out most of the water. Also, many air compressors place some oil in the air, so the cooler/coalescer system is very important for removing the oil. Note: a dry filter should be located after the dryer; the dessicant will continuously emit dust which can plug downstream equipment.
Another consideration must be the "shutdown" behavior of the entire system. When shutdown of the compressor occurs you want the air to continue flowing forward through the beds, not backward. Backward flow will usually damage the beds. Therefore, placing the receiver ahead of the dryers helps. Good soft-seat check valves also help.

Thermodynamics favor water absorption at higher pressures. In fact, that's how a "pressure swing" dryer system works--absorb water from high pressure air, then drop the pressure to desorb the water from the dessicant, then switch again. Most IA systems will have two drying beds for that reason, located after the compressor so as to take advantage of the pressure. When I was researching what to do, I could not find a good go-to site with all the info. you'd ever need and ended up getting a little here and a little there. Lots of poor info. too unfortunately. A bit frustrating.
This is how I did mine for my 800 sq. ft. shop a few months ago. Your typical water/separator first - this one is a Devilbiss. Many different brands and sizes out there. After a lot of searching the internet and thinking about it, I made the air dryer (Wilkerson) next in line, and then the Motorguard filter. It seems most would make the Motorguard next in line, but an air dryer creates dessicant dust plus I didn't want any moisture whatsoever to get into the Motorguard filter (not that it would, but now it won't for sure). I also have about 40' of 3/4" & 1/2" copper between the compressor and filters.
