Recessed LED lighting for under 7 foot ceiling
15- 6" cans is way too much in my opinion. Even 8 of them seems excessive.

If this is a general purpose room (such as a bedroom) I would put maximum 4 lights in.
If you are wanting super bright lighting and plan on keeping them dimmed down for the most part, then do 6- 6".
This is a to-scale layout of your room with 6- 6" cans. This leaves about 77" in between the lights. For this I put them 30" from the walls each way. If you decide on 4" cans instead, then you could do 8 of them. This is all still overkill in my opinion. I never want my general room lighting to be so bright- I use task lights for areas that need that.
I ended up going with TWELVE (4 x 3) 4-in lights on a dimmer (link). The room can get very bright thats okay because I plan to primarily use the space for a makerspace which needs good lighting. The light is pretty uniform with mild shadows. The lights I got could dim down to 5% so I can still get the room very dark for movies or whatever. So I am happy with my choice.
The How To Lighting Guide
Common Lighting Measurements for Installation
Youve probably asked yourself how high should a light switch be? Or are these kitchen island pendants the right size? Finding the perfect fixture is only half the story, proper installation is crucial to getting the look and feel you desire. Weve pulled together some of the most common lighting measurements to help make shopping a little less stressful.
Note: Not every light fixture is the same. Some are brighter, bigger, taller, or wider than your average fixture. And not every homeowner wants the standard installation - sometimes a lower chandelier is desired for a certain effect, or perhaps you require ADA-compliant solutions. When in doubt, always consult an expert, along with your local electrical code ordinances. In other words, dont take the numbers below as one-size-fits-all solutions.
That said, our guide showcases the most common measurements, for everything from wall sconce distance to recessed lighting placement. After all, no one should be left in the dark.
Kitchen Lighting
How high should a chandelier or pendant be above a kitchen island?

How large should my kitchen island lights be? How far apart should I place my kitchen island pendant lights?
The size of your kitchen island pendants will depend on how many pendants youd like, and how large your island is. Its better to start with pendant spacing. A general rule of thumb: Divide your kitchen island into even segments, one higher than the number of pendants youd like to hang. So if you want 3 pendants above your island, divide the island into 4 even segments. If you want 2 pendants above your island, divide the island into 3 even segments. Pendants should hang where each segment meets. So if you have a 6 foot kitchen island and you want 2 pendants above it, youd break the kitchen island into 3 2-foot segments, and hang the pendants at 2 feet and 4 feet from one side. For most pendants, we recommend approximately 30 in-between (depending on the pendant diameter).
Now to determine the ideal pendant size for your setup, take your island measurement and number of pendants youd like, and from there reverse calculate the ideal diameter given the spacing suggestion above.

When it comes to vanity light height, how high do I hang my vanity lights?
Vanity lights come in all shapes and sizes, and just like your bathroom mirror, you want them at about eye level to evenly illuminate your face. When hanging vanity lights on the side of your mirror, 60 - 70 from the ground is a safe bet.

What is the best placement for over mirror vanity lights?
A vanity light above the mirror should be about ¾ to the full width of the mirror. You dont want your vanity light to run past the edges of the mirror, and too small will not provide enough light. If your mirror is extra wide, consider 2 or 3 vanity lights above the mirror.

General rule of thumb when placing basic downlights: 36" - 48" between the light and the wall.

How far apart should can lights be?
When it comes to a smart recessed lighting layout, can lights should typically be no more than half the distance of your ceiling height. So if you have an 8 ceiling, you want the recessed lights no more than 4 apart. If you have a 10 ceiling, space your recessed lights no more than 5 apart. Typically, 2-4 is safe for 8 ceilings, 3-5 are safe for 10 ceilings, etc. It ultimately depends on how much lighting you need, and remember to position the lights above task areas, such as reading spots or work surfaces.

How do I light a textured wall?
If a wall is sloped (3 degrees is perfect, 5 degrees max), mount a wall grazer directly next to the textured wall. If the wall is straight, mount a wall wash 1 to 3 away from the wall; the beam spread will disperse and create the desired shadow effect. Just make sure your beam spread matches the effect youre looking for.
